Jakarta, 22nd February 2016. Fertilizer industry is one of the sector that continuously growing in Indonesia. The increasing demand of rice has made fertilizer become the important sector to be developed in the country. Reaching the production target, fertilizer industries are also encouraged to reduce their impact to the climate change by reducing their Green House Gasses (GHG) emission. In 2016, PAKLIM supports Ministry of Industry in the development of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in fertilizer industry. Organized by PAKLIM, a half-day discussion related with market and technologies in fertilizer industry was held at Ministry of Industry by inviting Thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions (TKIS). The meeting was participated by Director Sales & Business Development –TKIS Indonesia, national expert from TKIS Indonesia, Head of Sales – TKIS Asia Pacific, and from Hydrogen & Nitrates Division TKIS Germany; and also representatives from Ministry of Industry: , Research and Development Center for Green Industry and Environment (PIHLH) and Directorate of Upstream Chemical Industry. Bapak Lintong Sopandi Hutahaean as Head of PIHLH opened the meeting by expressing his gratitude and stated that fertilizer industry is a sector that is ready to be introduced with the new technology market. He also expressed his expectation from the meeting to gain information on types of technologies which are suitable to be implemented in Indonesian fertilizer industry. A presentation from TKIS was shared, including explanations of the company as provider for technology solution for industries. Annual existing condition of fertilizer demand world-wide was also shown, which is increasing every year. Fertilizer industry is a promising business in Indonesia, but to make it become a profitable business, some improvement is needed. It was discussed that there are many strategies to increase the efficiency of the plant, for instance by combining the urea plant, nitric acid plant, and phosphoric acid plant into one centralized plant. There are a lot of strategies that can be implemented in fertilizer industry, but to get the best option, the decision should be taken based on the preliminary study and focused on the objective of the plant development. Ministry of Industry found this meeting very useful in gaining their knowledge. Throughout 2016, PAKLIM will continue to support them in identifying the most suitable and appropriate mitigation actions for fertilizer industry.
The Education Agency of Malang City in East Java province and GIZ PAKLIM Work Area 3 on Climate Change Awareness and Education have organized a Training of Trainers workshop on eco-mapping for high schools in Malang. Held over 4-6 June 2015, the workshop introduced the concept of integrating environmental and climate issues into curricula as the “soul of the schools”. It also provided a solid foundation for teachers to change student attitudes and behavior regarding environmental issues. The training supported efforts by teachers and school leaders to transform their schools into environmentally conscious places with awareness of climate change. The training was attended by 22 staff from schools in Malang, as well as representatives of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and Malang Environment Agency. The teachers learned how to educate and inspire students to have high social and environmental awareness, by going beyond the confines of merely conveying knowledge through rote learning. The participants undertook an introductory session on eco-mapping to gain a clear understanding of the entire process. They also performed a practical exercise in identifying environmental and climate change issues based on thematic areas such as water, waste/litter and energy, as outlined in the Adiwiyata (Green Schools) program. The training involved a range of teaching methodologies and was led by Mrs Dwi Iriani and Mrs Tipuk Ujianti, both from State Senior High School 7. Besides presentations to explain new information and ideas, there was also a discussion to obtain participants’ opinions on their findings made during environmental audits of schools, group activities to enable participants to work together, as well as role playing and case studies. During the three days of training, participants shared their best practices in shifting the paradigm of environment and climate change education through leadership and school culture. Last but not least, they delved deeper into their own environmental action plans, based on school environmental audits conducted prior to the training. GIZ PAKLIM Work Area 3 and Malang Education Agency will continue to provide support for the development of environmental education that has a sustainable impact across all subjects in schools.
Jakarta, 24 November 2015 – A new generation of school students is being empowered to become environmental stewards. That was the message from PAKLIM WA3 at a national education symposium attended by President Joko Widodo, Education and Culture Minister Anies Baswedan, academics and education professionals. The Teachers Symposium, hosted by the Ministry of Education and Culture, was held at Jakarta’s Senayan Stadium over 23-24 November to celebrate National Teachers Day, which falls on 25 November. The symposium shared ideas and innovations in teaching techniques and delivery. GIZ PAKLIM WA3 operated a popular booth at the event to explain how its eco-mapping program raises the environmental awareness of students, teachers and the general public. Teachers and school leaders learned that eco-mapping is a student-centered approach, where students can play an important role in preserving the environment around their schools. By focusing on ideas, innovations and action, students can become future leaders with high environmental and climate change awareness. During the symposium, teachers were encouraged to present reports on learning innovations, which can then be circulated within schools and among teacher support groups. Teachers who write these beneficial articles can obtain extra credit points toward improving their career paths. All invited non-government organizations and aid agencies were welcome to showcase their activities to explain how their programs are impacting education in Indonesia. GIZ PAKLIM WA3 invited two national senior high schools (SMAN) and representatives from the Malang Environment Agency (BLH) and the Environmental Studies Tourism Park (TWSL) in Probolinggo, East Java, to showcase the best practices of eco-mapping pilot projects. One of the schools, SMAN 7 Malang City of East Java, proudly presented a video made by students, highlighting the results of its eco-mapping process, which had involved the entire school community. It showed that the journey to becoming a holistic green school is accomplished by not only focusing on “greening the school” but also on “greening the curricula”. SMAN 7 Malang provided details of its student-led awareness campaign and distributed a brochure outlining all of the school’s activities and achievements, including being named champion of the Green School Festival for two consecutive periods by the Malang Education Office and Radar Malang newspaper. The other school, SMAN 6 Bekasi of West Java, shared its experiences in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through waste management, energy conservation, and routine emissions inventories conducted by students and teachers. Student explained how their environment group initiated a 3R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) competition for Bekasi’s junior high schools, with the winner to be involved in green school environment initiatives. Geronimo, a student of SMAN 6 Bekasi, said the integration of environmental issues into the curriculum is changing the way students think about the environment. “It’s not only integrated into science classes but also into several other subjects, which gives us an understanding of how these issues can affect us as youths. We have also made a short video to help our juniors to understand the issues,” he told visitors to the booth of GIZ PAKLIM WA3. Representative from BLH Malang and TWSL Probolinggo shared their experiences in helping schools to develop ideas, innovation and knowledge in practicing eco-mapping. PAKLIM WA3 hopes that by highlighting the active roles of students, teachers and related counterparts, the public will see that a collaborative approach can encourage people to work together with a sense of urgency and responsibility to solve environmental problems, especially climate change.
