Probolinggo, August 25–27, 2015 – The Environmental Studies Tourism Park (Taman Wisata Studi Lingkungan, TWSL) in Probolinggo City, East Java province, has partnered GIZ PAKLIM WA3 in conducting an eco-mapping pilot project at five local schools with the aim of changing the public’s mindset on environmental issues. Eco-mapping is based on a curricula mapping approach and helps teachers to deliver an experiential learning approach over a first cycle timeline of 9 to 12 months. Introductory seminars were held at junior high schools (SMP) and senior high schools/vocational high schools (SMA/SMK) to provide teachers with details of each step of the eco-mapping process, and the activities within the process (Ecomapping©, curricula mapping and peer-to-peer sharing). The five selected schools are SMAN 4, SMAN 2, SMPN 4, SMPN 7 and SMPN 10. The dissemination commenced with a speech by Mr Suharyono, the head of TWSL Probolinggo, who emphasized the importance of schools in shifting public attitudes on environmental issues. He said the paradigm for environmental education should shift from “something for students to learn from the teachers” to “schools as a focal point where students/youths and teachers/adults interact with each other, learn together and find solutions to overcome environmental issues in their area”. The school environmental audits provided school communities with skills to identify environmental problems and find solutions to overcome them. In this visit, GIZ PAKLIM WA3 and TWSL Probolinggo assisted each of the five schools in conducting an initial environmental audit based on their own school maps. Teachers and students worked together in identifying the environmental issues based on thematic areas, such as water, waste/litter and energy.  They then discussed each issue to find bottom-up solutions based on their findings.    This visit is definitely not the end of the eco-mapping process. Rather, it marks the start of a challenging journey for the five schools and TWSL Kota Probolinggo to work hand-in-hand to change the way that communities think about the environment.  
GIZ PAKLIM WA3 has conducted eco-mapping at five schools in the East Java city of Probolinggo in association with the local Environmental Agency (Badan Lingkungan Hidup, BLH) and the Environmental Studies Tourism Park (Taman Wisata and Studi Lingkungan, TWSL).   The activity commenced on September 15th to 17th 2015 with awareness-raising, followed by environmental audits of the schools, which comprised two national senior high schools (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri, SMAN) and three national junior high schools (Sekolah Menengah Pertama Negeri, SMPN). The five schools are SMAN 2, SMAN 4, SMPN 4, SMPN 7 and SMPN 10.  Teachers were familiarized with the entire eco-mapping process and identified environmental issues based on thematic areas such as water, waste/litter and energy. The training was led by two experienced facilitators from earlier GIZ PAKLIM WA3 pilot schools, Mrs Dwi Iriani of SMAN 7 Malang and Mrs Luci Christiyanti of SMAN 6 Bekasi.    During three days of training, the participants learned to share best practices for using leadership and school culture to shift the paradigm of environment and climate change education. The participants and facilitators also made school action plans, based on each school’s environmental audit conducted prior to the training.    The training is not the end of the eco-mapping process. Instead, it is just the beginning, as teachers from various subject backgrounds are now speaking the same ‘language’ on the environment and climate change. It is expected that materials from this training will be incorporated into the education system; not only in the curriculum but also in school plans.    The action plans developed by the schools generally involved:   a)      1. Reducing resource consumption through the 3Rs – reduce, reuse and recycle; and through waste management (galonisasi); b)     2.  Improving energy management, for example, through energy saving measures and maintenance of cables; c)     3. Making an inventory of emissions; d)     4. Awareness-raising campaigns, such as greening school grounds through tree-planting, developing vegetable gardens and anti-litter campaigns. 5. For most of the schools, the greening of their grounds was the entry point for environmental action and learning, as well as curriculum links to integrate the issues.  GIZ PAKLIM WA3 and TWSL Kota Probolinggo will continue to support the five selected schools by providing technical expertise on eco-mapping. This support is expected to help the schools in updating and improving their teaching of environment and climate issues. Teachers were enthused by the training. Mr Budi, a teacher at SMAN 2 Probolinggo, said teachers learned that they and their students can be agents of change. “I came to realize that to start a movement is not merely the task of the school principal, but it also lies with me, as a teacher, and even with the students,” he said.  
BAPPENAS, with the support of GIZ Paklim and GIZ INDC, published a document on "Developing Indonesian Climate Mitigation Policy 2020-2030 through RAN-GRK Review" and distributed during UNFCCC COP 21 Paris. This document provides information on the rational behind Indonesia emission projection, including mitigation policy scenarios which are used as the basis of Indonesia’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC). Brief explanations on the scope and structure modelling construction in five sectors (economy, energy and transport, areas of land-based, industrial and waste) are also given in the document to provide a better understanding in how Indonesia develop its emission reduction path ways in the future. [Yogyakarta, 15 December 2015]. Bappenas, supported by GIZ Paklim, hosted an internal capacity building on climate change for Secretariat RAN-GRK, Secretariat ICCTF, GIZ INFIS, and GIZ Paklim from all work areas in Yogyakarta, 13-15 December 2015. The workshop was opened by Director for Environment BAPPENAS, Mrs Wahyuningsih Darajati and GIZ Programme Director Environment and Climate Change, Mr Stefan Bundscherer. The workshop consisted of presentations on update information on INDC, progress on MRV, SIGN SMART system, ICCTF work update, RAN-GRK Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting calculation for each sector as well as Business-as-Usual (BAU) Baseline calculation of each sector. The presentations were given by GIZ Paklim, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, ICCTF Secretariat, and RAN-GRK Secretariat.   The presentations generated fruitful discussions among participants, including discussions on how to define business as usual baseline, how to address the gap between GHG inventory and BAU Baseline calculation based on experience from Central Java, where are the challenges in data collection, and how to synergise the work of ICCTF with RAN-GRK. The workshop received positive feedbacks from the participants.
