Development Partnerships

The involvement of the private sector in development cooperation is an essential element for achieving the millennium development goals set out by governments and public institutions in the international arena. Therefore, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in Indonesia actively promotes Development Partnerships with the Private Sector (DPP) as a strategic instrument to lead to best practices and show cases between public and private actors, which could path the way for a broader implementation towards a low-carbon future.

Development partnerships combine the specific knowhow and resources of development cooperation and private business under the frame of concrete pilot projects.

PAKLIM offers instruments to support private business operations for sustainable development, for instance by taking part in the planning, implementation and financing of Development Partnerships that offer a significant benefit for the people in Indonesia, e.g. fostering technology innovations, improving options for implementation, assisting in the recruitment and training of personnel, supporting in the development of training materials and awareness campaigns or new or improving guidelines and compliance options, and opening doors to national and regional authorities, suppliers and customers. PAKLIM improves structures and processes and supports measures through which companies are able to tap new markets in Indonesia in a sustainable way.

Based on a shared commitment and common goals, responsibility, costs, and risks are borne jointly by the partners involved in the project, i.e. a project or programme such as PAKLIM and one or more private companies. Ultimately, by hence pooling strengths in Development Partnerships and realizing synergies between public and commercial interests, the joint ventures foster sustainable development and facilitate improved living conditions for the people of Indonesia.
